The Los Angeles Rams have known all along that extending veteran backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo would be a bit complicated this offseason. NFL insiders expected free agent Garoppoilo to follow Mike LaFleur to the Arizona Cardinals after LaFleur was hired as their new head coach.

When that failed to materialize, many expected LA to re-sign the veteran to back up starter Matthew Stafford once more. But that risk of losing Jimmy G planted the seed of exploring other options. Los Angeles wooed veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins.

That failed, but it highlighted the fact that a 33-year-old Garoppolo was not the ideal fit for a team in need of young alternatives in the quarterback room. But it did lead to a new NFL rumor about the future of Los Angeles' former backup quarterback.

It's the time of year for agents, general managers, players, and NFL teams to leak hints and whispers to alter the course of contract negotiations and draft projections, so everything must be taken with a grain of salt. But this story resonates for several reasons, not the least of which is Jimmy G remaining unsigned despite a perceived weak quarterback crop in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Could this be the Stetson Bennett chapter for the LA Rams?

Despite no LA Rams quarterback in 2027, the team has veteran quarterback Stetson Bennett on the roster now. As often as some sites have proposed cutting Bennett out of spite, he remains a vital component of the team's 2026 roster planning.

After all, he is uniquely positioned as the only quarterback drafted under head coach Sean McVay's tenure.

Garoppolo is 34 years old. He has 12 years of experience in the NFL, and as mentioned above, has accumulated a small fortune playing in the NFL. With no hope of competing for a starting role, perhaps the fun has waned for the veteran. No team has met his price.

Perhaps he has decided it's time to fold 'em and walk away.

General manager Les Snead has many options at quarterback in this draft, even as late as Day 3. And he already knew that adding a quarterback was a high priority.

Even without Jimmy Garoppolo, this team will find success in 2026. And it's never a good idea to accept all NFL rumors as gospel before the draft occurs. But it's true that the reunion with the former backup quarterback just took a hit.

As always, thanks for reading.
