Some LA Rams rumors suggest team may still be shopping at trade deadline

(2) Scenario II - Denver Broncos QB Zach Wilson to LA Rams

This one has made the rounds of NFL rumors in the past. And yet, with no traction or buzz, it's circled the track to come back again. We've laid out the reasons as to why NFL trade scenarios love to push the concept of any young out-of-favor quarterback as the target of the LA Rams, so I won't go into them now.

But the incentive to trade veteran QB Zach Wilson away, while still present with the team opting to rally around rookie QB Bo Nix, is a possibility. After all, you cannot have two quarterbacks, so the team has all but relegated Wilson to a backup QB role for the remainder of his career.

And yet, that may be enough for a guy who has also struggled when he had his chance to play in the NFL.

Scenario II - Why would or wouldn't the Broncos do this?

The Denver Broncos may or may not view QB Zach Wilson as an asset on their roster. Right now, he is a lame duck, simply playing out the last year of his rookie contract. So any team interested in adding him to the roster has to understand that he is simply a part-year rental. For the Broncos, that is enough for now.

But if some team blows the Broncos away with a surprising offer, that could change rapidly. The Broncos simply need a backup for now. And the team has veteran QB Jarrett Stidham ready to handle the load if and when the need arises. So Wilson may be viewed as unnecessary redundancy.

Scenario II - Why would or wouldn't the Rams do this?

The Rams need a successor to Stafford, and many continue to scoff at the concept that second-year quarterback Stetson Bennett is in the queue for that elevated role in 2025 or beyond. So if you believe that to be true, then Zach Wilson could be a trade target at the NFL Trade Deadline. This scenario does hold some real-world evidence to support it.

LA Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur worked with QB Zach Wilson when they were with the New York Jets. And it was that relationship, and the failure to develop Wilson successfully, that some believe ultimately led to the Jets firing LaFleur. Hey, that's the business of the NFL.

But Wilson never developed for the Jets. While he has shown promise with the Denver Broncos, does his past with LaFleur hurt or help his chances of this scenario taking place?

Scenario II - Conclusion:

Zach Wilson has more likelihood of being a trade target for the LA Rams than Bryce Young. But how much is that saying? After all, there is no urgent need driving either team to make a trade just for the sake of making a deal. If the Rams are interested in Wilson, for whatever reason, he is projected to become a free agent at the end of the 2024 NFL season.

Knox argues that a pick in Round 6 or 7 could pry Wilson from the Broncos roster. While that may be true, does he carry that late Day 3 value to the Rams roster in 2024? I simply do not see that value. And that is why I cannot see this as a viable trade scenario either.
