Stetson Bennett is lining up as the Rams best option in this doomsday scenario

The Los Angeles Rams quarterback room has been consistent and predictable over the past two seasons. Starting quarterback Matthew Stafford has led the group. Veteran Jimmy Garoppolo has been the team's primary backup. Behind them comes former Georgia standout Stetson Bennett. And they have been augmented in training camp by UFL quarterback Dresser Winn.

And that is how it's been in both 2024 and 2025. Unfortunately, wisps of smoke from fresh NFL rumors suggest that newly hired Arizona Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur may have his eye on poaching Jimmy G in the upcoming NFL free agency market.

In that doomsday scenario, what can Los Angeles possibly do?

Like it or not, experience counts in LA. Whether the team seeks reinforcements from free agency, a trade, or the draft, the only backup quarterback with experience in this offense is Stetson Bennett. And that could be the best option for this team right now.

Rams must turn and face the strange in 2026

Whether or not the Cardinals make a run at Garoppolo, general manager Les Snead has a clear picture that he is not the solution for this team, even as a backup for 2026. With Stafford's career nearing its end, the team must dedicate resources to finding and developing his successor. And Jimmy G is not that guy.

For that matter, neither is Stetson Bennett right now. But he is a cheaper option with more upside. He showcased his resiliency in 2024 preseason games. He showcased his mastery of the LA Rams offense in 2025 preseason games. Keep in mind that he performed with depth players and NFL hopefuls who never made the team.

He's earned a promotion

Sure, some fans have concerns. Multiple Rams sites do too. But it comes down to the coaching staff and the front office, and they seem pleased that Bennett has delivered so far. Had they not been satisfied, he would be gone. It's as simple as that. And if the team wants Jimmy G back in 2026, they can re-sign him.

But that may not happen.

What's the worst that can happen? If Stafford cannot suit up, the team's chances for another playoff run are scrapped anyway. And no rookie is going to get the reins this season. So at worst, Bennett becomes a bridge until a young quarterback can take over. Even then, Bennett could remain as a backup.

Just as a reminder, the team was content with backup quarterback John Wolford for multiple seasons.

Promoting Stetson Bennett to the primary backup quarterback role if Jimmy Garoppolo signs elsewhere is the best available option. Yes, the team could trade for, sign, or draft other options. But until they demonstrate a true command of head coach Sean McVay's offense, they are unlikely to be gifted the responsibility.

And it may work out better than any expects.

As always, thanks for reading.
