Stetson Bennett could be at the right place at the right time if The Los Angeles Rams execute an ideal trade that would bump him up the depth chart.
The context for a trade has to be the right one. Case in point, the Cincinnati Bengals traded with the Cleveland Browns for veteran Joe Flacco after losing Joe Burrow to a serious turf-toe injury.
Currently, there may be good reasons to consider a trade between LA and the Carolina Panthers right now. The Panthers need a healthy quarterback as starter Bryce Young has suffered an ankle injury.
Is that injury enough to motivate the Panthers to trade? It should. The Panthers have won four of seven games, but a two-game losing streak at this critical junction could be enough to pivot Carolina from postseason aspirations to settling on the next draft, and embatted head coach Dave Canales is wanting to keep his job.
And a fix to the roster could be a phone call away.
After all, wouldn't it be wise for Carolina to add a veteran who has playoff experience?
Veteran Jimmy Garoppolo is waiting for a chance to start.
How does Stetson Bennett's emergence give Les Snead options?
Bennett had a great preseason. Had this been his rookie season, he might be the darling of the NFL. However, an erratic history has placed him in disfavor with fans, which many are only now starting to reconsider.
The Rams roster boasts both Garoppolo and Bennett as backups. But if general manager Les Snead is truly aiming for Matthew Stafford's successor, some changes need to occur. Stafford is 37 years old, and Garoppolo is 33 years old.
That's ideal for a win-now goal. It's terrible for succession planning.
It's Jimmy G's experience and value today that could prompt a team like Carolina to make an offer Snead cannot refuse. Garoppolo could ensure the Panthers offense stays on track, as well as mentor Young after he heals up and returns to start.
Bennett is on the cusp of 28 years old. But for the first time in his short three years in the NFL, he appears to have total command of LA's offense. Does that make Jimmy G expendible? Not per se, but if a team is desperate enough at the NFL trade deadline to offer Snead the right value, it could happen. Right now, Stafford is playing in prime form. Bennett is solid enough to back him up.
If the right offer is available, the Rams could pivot from Jimmy G to the former Georgia Bulldog.
Stay tuned.
As always, thanks for reading.
