Stetson Bennett may be the answer to this off-overlooked Rams wide receiver's prayers.

We've been having a field day talking about how the unexpected proficiency and production from backup quarterback Stetson Bennett have unlocked a myriad of future opportunities for the Los Angeles Rams. We have also noticed that Bennett's confidence in the pocket has resulted in outstanding chemistry and connection with his receivers.

He has superb chemistry with tight ends Davis Allen and Terrance Ferguson. He continues to raise eyebrows when throwing to WR Jordan Whittington. But the most impressive chemistry so far has been the way Bennett seems to gel with WR Xavier Smith.

When I queried Rams WR Xavier Smith on X, I was able to find videos of his receptions from Bennett from five different practices at training camp. And they were not just run-of-the-mill receptions, either. They were made from difficult angles, against solid pass coverage, and in stride for huge gains.

Imagine all of that coming from a player who many fans suspect may not even make the 53-man Rams roster. I think it's time to reset the board.

There is something special about Xavier Smith

When it comes to the Rams depth chart, Smith may not jump out at fans as someone who will make significant contributions to the offense. He stands 5-foot-9, weighs 176 pounds, and can run an impressive 40-yard dash in just 4.48 seconds. While not the fastest player on the Rams roster, he's swift enough to run away from defenders.

And if he were exclusively used as a receiver, he would be hard-pressed to make the Rams roster. Thankfully, he is also a special teams contributor. In 2024, Smith was used as both a punt returner and a kick returner. This year, he is in open competition with veteran free agent Britain Covey for the return specialist role.

But wait, there's more.

Smith's versatility makes him ideally suited as a gunner for the Rams' coverage teams. Punter Ethan Evans has not optimized his booming punts because his best punts outdistanced the coverage, allowing huge returns. With Smith as a gunner, he arrives at the punt returner when the football arrives. That improves Evans' net punt average, which benefits the entire team.

Xavier Smith is not a lock to make the team. Not yet, anyway. But he brings so much to the table in so many roles that he makes a compelling case to stick around. Stetson Bennett just gave written-off Rams WR Xavier Smith a reason to believe again. The rest is up to him.

As always, thanks for reading.
