Stetson Bennett trade hypothesis is gaining traction, and the Rams might be listening

Believe it or not, Los Angeles Rams quarterback Stetson Bennett is getting glowing reviews. While some may question the authenticity of the accolades, Bennett has continued to improve and develop under the watchful eye of quarterback coach Dave Ragone.

Now, though, fans have pivoted from cheering preseason heroics to concern over how the Rams will sneak so many talented and likeable stars onto 53 active roster spots and 16 practice squad openings. The team checked off one box by trading running back Jarquez Hunter to the Miami Dolphins for receiver Tutu Atwell.

Well, what about trading Bennett? That scenario was first proposed by NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky. And it seems to be picking up steam. One trade proposal suggested that the Atlanta Falcons might be willing to flip two 2027 draft picks (Nos. 181 and 220).

Of course, any exchange is entirely negotiable. But speculative trade proposals are multiplying by the hour. As if Aaron Donald's imminent decision was not enough to track as the preseason ends, now fans get to stay abreast of trade rumors, too.

Did Rams have another reason for sitting Stetson Bennett in Game 3?

Typically, the Rams only sit players who have earned a roster spot. But even as Bennett sat out the preseason finale, head coach Sean McVay has avoided naming him the backup.

What's wrong with this picture?

Entering his fourth season in Horns, Bennett is either worthy of the backup role or he isn't. And the fact that he hasn't yet been named QB2 is telling. The former Georgia quarterback is playing in the last season of his rookie contract. There is no more wiggle room.

What if Los Angeles sat Bennett for a different reason altogether? Teams often sit players who are the topic of trade talks. Sitting players limits the injury risk that could derail negotiations.

No reputable NFL insider has reported on any talks involving the Rams or Bennett. But it was only speculation that foreshadowed the Rams' trade for cornerback Trent McDuffie. No one reported on formal negotiations before they acquired Myles Garrett. LA loves to keep the lid closed.

Bennett is worth keeping. But if he is destined to test free agency in 2027, it could be worth more to dangle him on the trade block. Many fans already view Simpson as the more trustworthy quarterback.

Perhaps the powers-that-be view the situation in a similar light.
