Stetson Bennett's strong start doesn't have Rams ready to call QB2 race

Some project rookie Ty Simpson to claim the Los Angeles Rams' primary backup quarterback spot. At least one Rams depth chart already has Simpson inked into the QB2 job. But all indications so far are that former Georgia star Stetson Bennett has pole position in the race, and he seems to be entrenching himself there.

On Day 1 of training camp, it was Bennett who worked with the starters. On Day 2, he took the lion's share of work with the second string. Nonetheless, head coach Sean McVay suggested that competition for the backup job continues:

"Stetson got the majority of those reps with the second group today, but Ty came in, did a nice job with the one set that he did have, and we'll just kind of continue to evaluate.

"But being able to figure out what that looks like is important. I think both of those guys have done a nice job, and obviously having No. 9 out there, he looked pretty damn sharp, so it was good to have him."

No, the competition isn't over. But you can bet the mortgage that Simpson, and not Bennett, will get more work in preseason games.

The only Rams quarterback controversy is that there is no controversy

After the Rams invested a first-round pick in Simpson, he would seem to be Matthew Stafford's heir apparent. But LA also drafted a prospect who, despite tremendous upside, needs patience and coaching to earn the right to start in the NFL. And that is exactly who Simpson is.

While the Rams understood that Simpson was a crock-pot draft selection, they were able to make the investment knowing he will take time to develop because Bennett was ready for a larger role now. And while no head coach should be expected to declare the competition over on the second day of training camp, it's impossible to ignore all the breadcrumbs.

McVay won't compromise; that much is clear. He wants his quarterback to know the offense as well as he does. And while Simpson may be a quick study, he could struggle to both learn the scheme and then demonstrate that knowledge in his performance on the field.

There is no quarterback controversy in Los Angeles. Stafford is the starter. Bennett is the backup. Simpson is the future.
