Rams fans see one more move before the team is ready for the 2025 NFL season. The question is, will the team make the move before mini-camp?

Jalen Ramsey vs. Greg Newsome

There is no shortage of NFL rumors that link Miami Dolphins defensive back Jalen Ramsey to the Los Angeles Rams. The team knows Ramsey, Ramsey knows the team, and the two parted ways amicably when the Rams fell to a 5-12 record in 2022 and realized that Jalen Ramsey deserved to belong to a more competitive team. Curiously, the Rams have played to a 20-14 regular season record since trading Ramsey to the Dolphins, and the Dolphins have played to a 19-15 regular season record.

Oops.

Is Jalen Ramsey a wise addition for the Rams' defense? Ramsey still carries an elite aura to the football field and shoulders the burden of outstanding defense admirably, no matter what the offense throws at him. While he may be seen as less dominating in pure pass coverage, he more than checks the boxes with elite run defense and sneaky-good pass rushing skills.

The thing is, he is expensive. Not only do the Rams have to trade for him, but they must somehow shoulder the burden of his 2025 salary cap hit.

If the Rams want to ensure one more Super Bowl appearance for veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford, then Ramsey makes a great deal of sense. And if the Rams see Ramsey as just a one-year deal? Ramsey comes with a $21 million guaranteed contract. So:

But is there a less expensive alternative to Ramsey?

One such young cornerback is a Cleveland Browns young cornerback, Greg Newsome II. Just 25 years old, Newsome is entering his fifth and final year of his rookie contract, with a huge spike up to $13.4 million for 2025. That is still cheaper than Ramsey's projected $21 million for one year. And at the age of just 25 years old, Newsome is a likely candidate to be re-signed to the team for 2026 and beyond if he pans out.

And NFL rumors in the days leading up to the 2025 NFL Draft reportedly had Newsome on the trade block.

Newsome does not pack the plug-and-play impact of Jalen Ramsey for 2024, but as a Round 1 rookie selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, he brings the potential to become a keystone in the Rams' secondary going forward. If the Rams have no interest in extending him, he can still trigger the NFL algorithm for a compensatory draft pick award in the 2027 NFL Draft.

Rams fans would love to see the team reunite with DB Jalen Ramsey in 2025. But the team still has some options if the secondary is still under consideration for an upgrade. For fans, it's simply a matter of kicking back and waiting for the team to make its move.

As always, thanks for reading.
