If you have never faced the bitter cold regularly in your life, the thought of plunging into sub-freezing temperatures is akin to sticking your finger in a light socket. There are memories of pain and discomfort to last a lifetime. But for at least one LA Rams player, Canadian-born outside linebacker Michael Hoecht, the return of winter cold is like greeting an old friend. regularly
Cold is like many elements that nature throws at us. Often misunderstood, we have created an unhealthy fear of cold. So having lived a significant part of my life in Anchorage, Alaska, I can vouch for the fact that sometimes, unbearably cold weather to one person is simply a bit of fresh air to another.
Cold is a state of mind
The human body is quite miraculous in many ways. When facing cold, the body will shiver, creating unintentional muscle activity to burn through calories more quickly, and raising the temperature of the body. At the same time, blood is redirected to the body core and head, ensuring that the vital organs stay regulated. That is why hands and feet, the extremities, get cold first.
But cold air can be invigorating too. As temperatures drop, you begin to notice how much of an impact sunshine makes in terms of adding warmth. And still cold air is not nearly as frigid as you might think. After all, air acts like insulation. In the end, cold affects you because you think about it.
I'm not suggesting that everyone should face the cold air bare-chested in a knit cap. But in the case of OLB Michael Hoecht, the cold simply is not as noticeable as it is to so many who do not have much experience dealing with it. And once the football game is underway, Hoecht's teammates won't notice the cold, either.
The Rams are not only facing the New York Jets, but are facing bitter cold temperatures in this one. Rather that bundle up in layers and shiver, Hoecht is showing the Jets and fans in Met Life Stadium that cold weather does not phase him. And much like teammate RB Kyren Williams, he is sending a pre-game message to the Jets as a result.
As always, thanks for reading.
