Versatility is a dangerous, difficult trait to coach in a rookie. The Los Angeles Rams know something about that. One example is second-year defensive lineman Ty Hamilton, a fifth-round pick in the 2025 draft. Hamilton saw just 138 snaps all last season. For a versatile rookie, that sounds about right.
A failure? Not really. Hamilton was tasked with absorbing multiple roles, techniques, and responsibilities along the defensive front. On the Rams' roster, you have to master the role before you get to play it.
Hamilton knows he'll have to make himself useful this season. It's no longer enough to be a 'depth player' now. Rookie Tim Keenan III was drafted to fill precisely that role. Hamilton must show he is ready to make an impact, starting in training camp.
Rams need more from Ty Hamilton
Whatever the Horns sought in Hamilton as a rookie prospect, they didn't get it. That's not all on Hamilton, as the defense was frantically mixing and matching players as key contributors fell to injury. But he saw more than enough playing time to understand where he needs to improve in his second season.
Let's be honest. Hamilton's rookie production, highlighted by 11 tackles and one quarterback hit, won't excite anyone. But the Rams may find themselves at a crossroads this season with too many veterans chasing too few extensions.
The defense could benefit from seeing what less experienced players can offer in the right role. As a recent draft investment who showed promise at Ohio State, Hamilton is one guy poised to step up.
Of course, he needn't reach the level of, say, star DT Kobie Turner. But Hamilton can be a dependable rotational player behind Turner on the depth chart. That's exactly what this defense needs to keep starters fresh for a Super Bowl run.
At 6-foot-3, 301 pounds, Hamilton has the size and athleticism to line up all over the defensive line. The Rams need more from him this season, and now he'll have a chance to put that valuable versatility on display.
As always, thanks for reading.
