Ty Simpson post-draft sworn secrecy led to viral controversy that never was

He was so eager to follow instructions that he didn't know when it was safe to admit the truth.

The problem that comes with the instant access afforded to everyone with social media is the complete lack of context and the unfiltered nature of raw information. There were may contriobuting factors to the Los Angeles Rams first selection from the 2026 NFL Draft, quarterback Ty Simpson. But one of the most complex componentes was the viral conclusion that Simson was being forced upon head coach Sean McVay.

That assertion exploded when Ty Simpson suggested that he never met with McVsy.

And McVay's Mr. Grumpy demeanor during the draft only added fuel to a fire that raged quite hot on its own. It turns out that McVay was hesitant to show any fervor over Simpson in respect to his starting quarterback, Matthew Stafford.

Los Angeles is known for swearing players to secrecy. And the team avoids inviting prospects to Los Angeles to avoid putting other NFL teams on the scent. So when LA asked Ty Simpson not to speak about pre-draft meetings. That oath held up even to his post-draft interviews, even though he had met at length with McVay

Ty Simpson was the LA Rams pick all along

Louis Riddick knew it months ago. Dan Orlovsky all but called it out weeks ago. Fansided connected the dots days before the draft, undoubtedly spurred on by Ramblin Fan's expectation that Simpson would be the team's selection in Round 1. Breadcrumbs were hinting at LA's selection of Simpson for months, despite the sworn secrecy.

Fans who were surprised or even disappointed were not paying attention. While the team did not admit to the need, the quarterback room lay empty in 2027. That's a huge roster hole for a perennial playoff team. And with Stafford's back injury in 2025, the team understood that the remainder of the girl-dad quarterback's career was running out.

30 other NFL teams passed on 2026 rookie quarterbacks (for the most part) to participate in the auction of four or five quarterback prospects in the 2027 NFL Draft. Los Angeles would have neither the ammunition nor the leverage to get close to drafting a quarterback in the next draft.

It was now or never.

Still unhappy? That's okay. Just mark your calendar for OTAs, training camp, and preseason games. Once you see Ty Simpson in Horns running this offense, you will fall in love with him. He's not just any ole SEC quarterback. He was a one-man offensive weapon, a guy who succeeded on his own wits and abilities, and not a guy riding the coattails of Crimson Tide elite players.

A blue-collar quarterback out of Alabama? The Horns were made for this guy.

As always, thanks for reading.
