Mentoring is something that the Los Angeles Rams hope to see from veteran players. But it's not an easy task. Some players simply do not possess the patience to engage in responding to endless questions from younger players. Other players have set such a high bar for themselves that they are ill-prepared to help get younger players started in the right direction.
Still other players are so focused on winning their own roster slot and reps that they have little time nd energy to share to help others along the way.
Thankfully, keeping it close to the vest is not part of veteran tight end Tyler Higbee's personality. He is willing to pay it forward, sharing his knowledge and experiences in the NFL with younger players who are coming up behind him. And one such youngster is rookie tight end Terrance Ferguson. Right now, he's Higbee's understudy. But he won't be for long

Tyler Higbee loves what he sees in Terrance Ferguson
Getting off on the right foot starts with the team. And Rams HC Sean McVay made it a point to ensure that he contacted Tyler Higbee before selecting rookie Terrance Ferguson. And it was that minor gesture of respect that started everything off on the right foot. After he was selected, Higbee reached out and offered to give Ferguson any help he might need.
It was that offer that set the stage for Higbee to become Ferguson's mentor. But more than just a veteran to share wisdom. Higbee has invested positive feedback as well, as this quote demonstrates:
"He's (Terrance Ferguson) showing some flashes of really good stuff. He's gonna be a great ball player, and getting him out here and doing it day in and day out. So it's been special to have him and (he's) a great dude, and we're excited to have him," Higbee said.
The veteran tight end is entering his tenth season with the Rams. The 32-year-old veteran has something to prove, as his 2024 season was tainted by recovering from an ACL injury. He only played in three games last year. Complicating matters even further, Higbee is projected to test the 2026 NFL Free Agency market.
Even if the Rams re-sign Higbee, his next contract will almost certainly be a one-year deal. By all rights, Higbee understands that Terrance Ferguson is taking the baton from him, just as he had taken the baton from veteran tight ends 10 years ago.
It's the cycle of life in the NFL. Paying it forward honors previous players who did the same. And at some point in his NFL career, rookie TE Terrance Ferguson will be an NFL veteran who will be asked to mentor a rookie tight end. But to do so, he must deliver. From what Higbee says about Ferguson, he is ready to do so in 2025.
As always, thanks for reading.
