What's driving the recent Rams rumors?

The latest spike in Rams rumors over trading Cooper Kupp occured when the Kansas City Chiefs and the LA Rams were openly in discussions over a trade of Kupp to the Chiefs. But the Rams asking price of a Round 2 pick was too high of a price, so they pivoted and traded with the Tennessee Titans for veteran WR DeAndre Hopkins. While that likely takes the Chiefs out of the market for wide receiver help, it adds pressure to teams who have not bolstered their rosters to do so before the trade deadline. Just to summarize, the following trades have happened recently:

  • Cleveland Browns traded WR Amari Cooper to the Buffalo Bills
  • Las Vegas Raiders traded WR Devante Adams to the New York Jets
  • Tennessee Titans traded WR DeAndre Hopkins to the Kansas City Chiefs

That leaves at least the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers as AFC teams that should be seeking offensive help before the trade deadline, if only to keep pace. And that opens the door for NFL teams to follow suit, like the Philadelphia Eagles, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Washington Commanders, and even the San Francisco 49ers.

The LA Rams are no strangers to loading up on veterans for a Super Bowl run. In 2021, the team made a trade for Denver Broncos elite outside linebacker Von Miller, and then signed free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. The two players were instrumental in not only helping the team earn a playoff berth, but in winning four consecutive playoff games to ultimately hoist the Lombardi Trophy.

Now, the polarity is running in the opposite direction. At 2-4, pressure is mounting for the team to pull in the brick and let the door to the 2024 NFL playoffs close. After all, the team has been restructuring the team rather extensively since the 2023 NFL Draft, adding 14 rookies that year. In 2024, the team added 10 rookies. And that does not include undrafted rookies.

So the team already has one foot in the door to a full-blown rebuild.
