Why are so many NFL pundits baffled by the LA Rams selection of Ty Simpson?

Ah, yes. Offseason grades for players who have yet to take a snap for the Los Angeles Rams continue to roll in. And the grades for the offseason additions continue to be squelched by the team's selection of rookie quarterback Ty Simpson. Imagine that. The top-scoring offense from 2025 is getting dinged for not adding rookie playmakers to the roster.

Unfortunately, Los Angeles did add rookie playmakers to the offense. Many could argue that tight end Max Klare is a much better fit in LA's offense than Kenyon Sadiq, especially after selecting Terrance Ferguson in 2025. And nobody mentions Miami wide receiver CJ Daniels, who has plenty of potential in Los Angeles's limited role for a rookie wide receiver.

Nobody argues that rookie quarterback Ty Simpson wasn't the best rookie quarterback remaining on the draft board after Fernando Mendoza was selected first overall. And had LA traded back, which was impossible to do without a willing trade partner, perhaps the stern admonishments for daring to draft Simpson would be praised.

There are many protests over why so many despise the selection. But in the end, it will all sort itself out when the rookie quarterback finally gets to play.

Here's what Cody Williams had to say about the LA Rams offseason

In the interim, the LA Rams face the comments from NFL pundits as to why the same Rams brass that seems to find success each year was wrong to take a chance in 2026 on one rookie. Would it be better for Los Angeles to draft Kenyon Sadiq, only to sit him on the bench all season?

Absolutely not. But that would have been the 'right' choice if so many NFL analysts had their say. Speaking of which, what did Fansided's Cody Williams have to say about the LA Rams offseason?

Offseason Grade: B-

  • Best Move: Trading for and extending Trent McDuffie
  • Worst Move: Drafting Ty Simpson 13th overall

In all honesty, the most jarring part of the Ty Simpson pick was that it went against what we expected and had seen from the Los Angeles Rams throughout the offseason. Trading a first-round pick for Trent McDuffie while continuing to overhaul the secondary was smart, and quite indicative of a win-now move in a Super Bowl window. So, to draft a long-term contingency plan at QB in the first round seemed misguided and cost the Rams a higher grade for the offseason thus far. - Fansided Cody Williams

To be fair, he hated the offseason moves of all the NFC West Division teams. Here's how he broke down his grades:

  • Arizona Cardinals: Offseason grade - C-
  • Los Angeles Rams: Offseason grade - B-
  • San Francisco 49ers : Offseason grade - B-
  • Seattle Seahawks: Offseason grade - C

Williams did hand out four A grades to the Dallas Cowboys, Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, and New Orleans Saints. But, as is the case with all instant draft grades, this is more about what authors and analysts expected to happen vs. what actually took place.

Simpson could be a huge disappointment. He could also be a solid NFL quarterback. If he disappoints, it won't matter that he was taken. Come to think of it, that's true if he shines in the spotlight as well.

As always, thanks for reading.
