Why Rams WR Puka Nacua 'no marriage' choice is the right choice for his career

He wants to focus on winning a Super Bowl. Here's why Rams fans should be thrilled about that.

With the Los Angeles Rams handing the offensive baton off from veteran wide receiver Cooper Kupp to young NFL star Puka Nacua, the offense is bound to change. As much as Kupp trained Nacua in the finer details of competing as an NFL wide receiver, their styles are a bit different. And that is fine. It simply means that the offense will have a new tempo, strategy, and playbook in 2025.

But while the change in the Rams offense is normal and expected, the changes in Puka Nacua's life are not altogether expected. Let me explain. In a recent St. Brown Podcast, Puka Nacua shared that he has recently broken up with his girlfriend. During the podcast, he elaborated in his explanation. He shared that he doesn't see marriage in his immediate future, as he is focused on trying to win a Super Bowl.

I applaud his perspective.

Perhaps one of the most difficult strategies of becoming a star player at a young age in the NFL is the need to drown out the background noises and distractions. Wealth happens quickly. Wisdom does not. And it's the disparity of pace in a young man's life that can cause his NFL career to spin out of control.

But the hierarchy of the factors in his life, as in any young NFL player's life, are topsy turvy. You see, it's the dedication to hard work that leads to incredible play-making ability on the football field. That play-making ability leads to NFL star status. Becoming an NFL star increases wealth, popularity, and fame. And with that comes celebrity endorsements, high-profile events, and the elevation to the elite star status of other professional athletes, film stars, and ultra rich events.

That's quite a bit to process for a young man whose basis for fame starts on dewy mornings in sweats and working out in sneakers, weights, and pylons. The key to success is discipline and focus. While romance can be quite rewarding, the emotional roller coaster of meeting someone romantically is a huge distraction from working out. When things are good, the focus tends to veer toward finding time to spend together.

When things are bad, the energy and motivation to work hard to be the best receiver possible wanes.

The time to compete for a Super Bowl is now. Eventually, romance will find him, whether he is looking for it or not. But it's nice to hear that he is interested in perfecting his craft for the immediate future. And I will go out on a limb to speculate that his teammates and coaches are fine with that decision as well.

As always, thanks for reading.
