The Rams weren’t that active in free agency, however they could still be in the running for wide receiver Kenny Britt. One thing that fans look forward to after a free agent signs with the team, is what number they will be wearing. Those numbers were selected today, and here they are:
According to Casey Pearce, the Rams media information manager, new backup quarterback Shaun Hill will wear the number 14, linebacker Etienne Sabino will wear 59, defensive end Alex Carrington will wear number 92, and cornerback Greg Reid will wear number 39.
Here’s the run-down:
The thing that immediately should jump out is with newly acquired cornerback Reid given the number 39. As it should be known by all Rams fans, 39 was the number worn by Rams all-time leading rusher Steven Jackson who left the team last offseason.
Now, I realize Jackson is no longer on the team and he hasn’t retired yet, but Jackson and the number 39 have a special place in St. Louis and to hand it out just one year after he left didn’t bode well with with me.
There is no doubt that once Jackson does retire from the NFL, and hopefully as a Rams, that the number 39 will get retired, but I guess until then, it will be free game to anybody else that wants it. Reid will have some big shoes to fill when he hits the field in August.
And, really, if you look on the bright side, you can save some cash by just buying some duct tape, as it comes in all sorts of colors these days, apply it on your 39 jerseys over the name, use a permanent marker wisely and write Reid, and you have just made yourself a Greg Reid jersey.
As for the other players, 59 has been previously worn by London Fletcher, Eugene Sims previously wore the number 92, and Rams great, kicker Jeff Wilkins previously wore the number 14.
