St. Louis Rams Offensive Coordinator Position Not Appealing

facebooktwitterreddit

Wednesday afternoon it was reported by Ian Rapoport that Nathaniel Hackett, a candidate for the St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator position and had interviewed twice, had pulled out and instead accepted a position to be the Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback coach.

That’s right, he accepted a position to the a quarterback coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars rather than be the offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams.

With possible candidates in Greg Roman, Kyle Shanahan, Adam Gase, Rob Chudzinski, and now Hackett accepting positions elsewhere when St. Louis was also interested, it begs the question, is the St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator position not appealing to prospective candidates?

The Rams have now been looking for an offensive coordinator for a couple of weeks. When the process began there were over a half dozen openings. As it stands now, only the 49ers and Rams have yet to hire a coordinator.

This was expected to be a slow process as it is Jeff Fisher after all, but this slow? At this point its not a problem with the Rams not reaching out to people, but candidates not wanting to come to St. Louis.

With the process ongoing for almost a half-month now, it is becoming quite concerning that the Rams may end up with a Tim Walton 2.0 situation. Coaches  usually have a handful of guys that they see as possible replacements, and the fact that the Rams have no answers right now, is troubling.

When Fisher came to St. Louis, it was expected that St. Louis would become a more attractive destination for players and coaches, and that just isn’t the case anymore.

Sure, they got Cortland Finnegan, Jared Cook, and Jake Long to come to St. Louis as free agents as well as Gregg Williams to come coach the defense, but a lot has changed since then.

As it stands right now, the Rams have question marks surrounding the quarterback position, they have question marks as to where they will play after 2015 whether it be Los Angeles or St. Louis, and the fact that whoever accepts the position would have to fit their system to run the Jeff Fisher offense.

Without Bradford healthy, without stability around the team, and with a philosophically stubborn coach, the Rams offensive coordinator position just isn’t as desirable or appealing as fans would like to think.

With the candidates thinned out, the Rams can either dip into the college ranks(unlikely) or do what we all thought they would do from the very beginning, hire within.

And that option, isn’t an appealing one for the fans.
