Rams do an about face; Gurley to start camp on active roster

Earlier this month it was reported that the Rams first round draft pick, running back Todd Gurley, would begin training camp on the league’s NFI list. The non-football injury list would keep Gurley out of drills until he was upgraded to active, but that move could have been made at any point without penalty. However, now Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com is reporting that Gurley passed his conditioning test Tuesday and will begin camp on time, and on the active roster.

Gurley tore his ACL this past season while still with the University of Georgia. Prior to his injury, Gurley was a very physical runner and had amassed almost 1,000 rushing yards on the season before landing awkwardly on the knee in the final play of a blowout victory for the Bulldogs against Auburn. Surprisingly, Gurley opted to enter the NFL draft and forgo his final year of eligibility. St. Louis would select him with the tenth overall selection in this April’s draft.

The plan from the beginning seemed to point towards the team taking things slow with the rookie running back. A torn ACL is a serious matter for any player, but especially one that relies so heavily on the side-to-side movements of the knee that the ligament provides. All signs now point towards Gurley beginning camp on time and without any other designation from the team.

If you asked Gurley, his goal from the very beginning was to start camp along side his teammates. He said back in June,

"“I hope I at least get to go do some individual stuff. So that’s the next goal right there.”"

It would appear Gurley will have the opportunity to do that and a bit more as camp is set to open at the end of the week. He doesn’t appear to be 100% at this point, but things are certainly trending in the right direction.

St. Louis Rams training camp is set to open this Friday, July 31st, at 4:30pm EST. Veterans will report today, Wednesday July 29th. To find the full schedule and all the finer details about the Rams training camp, click through to see the full schedule.
