Chip Kelly is not the answer for the St. Louis Rams

As the 2015 season wraps up for the St. Louis Rams there are still a lot of questions to be answered about this team. Who will be the starting quarterback for the Rams come week 1 next year? Should the Rams help the offensive line or the receiving core in the NFL draft? But more importantly, one of the main questions about this team is whether or not Coach Jeff Fisher can lead the St. Louis Rams.

More from Rams News

In his fourth year with St. Louis, Fisher holds a 27-35-1 record with zero playoff appearances. With how the Rams can perform on certain game days, they are inches away from performing at an elite level. The Rams have a chance to finish off the season on a four game winning streak and end the season with an 8-8 record. That will match their best record since 2006 when they also finished with an 8-8 record.

If Fisher is able to finish off the season on a winning streak, I do not see the Rams cutting ties with Coach Fisher. However you never know what could happen in the next couple of weeks, certainly Chip Kelly knows a little about that. Yesterday Coach Kelly was fired from the Philadelphia Eagles right before the end of the season. In three seasons with the Eagles, Kelly held a 26-21 record with one playoff appearance. Surely that record is a lot better than Fishers.

Should the Rams look more into bringing Coach Kelly over to the St. Louis Rams? The short answer no. Even though the records are not the same, the Eagles got worse under Kelly. Kelly has been known for his quick shotgun offense and led the NFL in yards per play in 2013, yet finished his stint with the Eagles with a 24th rank yards per play offense.

As for Coach Fisher, he is about to have his best year with the Rams if they beat their rivals the San Francisco 49ers Sunday. The main worry of this season came when the Rams were on a dreadful five game losing streak. In that losing streak, running back Todd Gurley was unable to reach over 100 purpose yards, as the Defense slowly fell apart as well. Also the play calling was another problem as, the Rams scored 51 points in that stint. Yet allowed 132 points.

It was noticed by many that quarterback Nick Foles, who Jeff Fisher brought in from the Eagles was not performing at all, and was soon benched. backup Case Keenum came in and has led the Rams to a 3-1 record this season. Another key point to show is the firing of offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti. Ever since Cignetti has been let go of his duties, current offensive coordinator Rob Boras holds a 3-0 record. If the Rams were to fire Cignetti and make the quarterback switch earlier, where would the Rams be in the playoff hunt? Coach Fisher has done what he could have done this season, as finishing 8-8 this season is an improvement.

On the other hand, Coach Kelly lost control of the Eagles team and was on a downward slope to end the season. Fisher has overcome a five game losing streak and has flipped this Rams team around. Yes he has not reached the playoffs yet, but if the Rams can find a quarterback, they clearly have an offensive coordinator who knows how to call plays now. It’s been an up and down season for the Rams like always but there is one clear answer for the Rams coaching staff.  Clearly Chip Kelly is not the answer for the St. Louis Rams as Jeff Fisher will be back next year to lead the Rams into the playoffs.
