When comparing the numbers, there’s no reason for Tavon Austin to be making more money than New England Patriots wideout Julian Edelman this season.

Last offseason, the Los Angeles Rams made the surprise decision to reward Tavon Austin with a hefty four-year, $42 million extension, mainly because the former first-round pick still had plenty to prove when it came to being a top wideout in the league. Frustrating doesn’t even begin to describe the type of year Austin had with the Rams in 2016 when considering he set a career high of 509 receiving yards, but that’s not even the most ridiculous fact about the wideout.

As most football fans know, the New England Patriots rewarded Julian Edelman with a two-year extension for $11 million on Thursday, with $9 million in guarantees. That’s right, Edelman will be so overpaid by the Patriots that he’s not even going to come close to making the type of money that Austin’s deal with the Rams is going to pay him, as pointed out by ESPN’s Bill Barnwell.

When looking at the numbers, it’s not even a question that Edelman seems to be way overpaid by the defending Super Bowl champions, even though part of the reason is most likely due to the fact he would prefer to take less money in New England just to stick around. Even if that is the case, this situation just proves even more how much the Rams are overpaying Austin since his level of production doesn’t even come close to what Edelman has done for the Patriots.

If anything, Edelman deserves to be making the type of money Los Angeles is paying Austin when considering he’s recorded at least 92 catches in three of the last four seasons with New England. Once again, this comparison of Edelman’s contract to Austin’s is the perfect example of why so many players end up holding out in the offseason since a majority of the players around the league are clearly overpaid.

While the argument can be made that Austin deserves more time to prove himself during his first year in Sean McVay’s offense, it still doesn’t takeaway from the fact that he’s still going to earn more money than one of the league’s top wide receivers in Austin. The sad thing is, Edelman will still most likely end up out playing Austin this upcoming season, but will still end up making less money thanks to the Rams jumping the gun last offseason.
