St Louis Rams Stadium Proposal: A developing project

The Rams’ offseason has shown many changes within the franchise, and a big question looming around the Rams’ fan-base is whether the team will be on the move to Los Angeles, where Stan Kroenke is planning a 1 billion dollar stadium in Inglewood. With this development however, the Rams fans may also be asking, what is the progress of the St. Louis Rams stadium proposal?

The prospect of Kroenke (CEO) moving the Rams to Los Angeles has long been in the mix, and remains a very realistic option for the Rams franchise. Throughout this long and dragging speculation, fans have voiced their opinion on the matter, but at the end of the day, the Rams have a history in both cities.

The talk of the Rams moving to Los Angeles grew larger towards the end of the 2014 regular season, and in response to this, Missouri Gov. J Nixon authorized a riverfront stadium along the Mississippi River in St Louis to be constructed, and in doing so, is trying to keep the Rams in St Louis.

The stadium was first proposed on January 9 2015, and had a projected cost of 985 million dollars, adding to this, the stadium plan was designed to not only give a new home to the Rams but it was also designed to support the prospect of a new MLS team in St Louis. Although the proposed stadium provides ample facilities and seat numbers, funding this project has been the hardest issue to overcome.

Roger Goodell has encouraged Blitz and Peacock with their stadium proposal, stating “We’re going to make sure we give them the full evaluation, the full consideration”, a promising statement from the NFL Commissioner, showing fans in St Louis that there is awareness to the stadium plans, and this is a good sign that the NFL is taking this stadium project seriously. On the flip side to this, Indianapolis Colts CEO, Jim Irsay was interviewed after the NFL owners meeting in regards to a Los Angeles team, and when asked about the prospect of the NFL moving back to Los Angeles he said “It’s not a matter of ‘if’, It’s a matter of how many”, giving a strong sign of the push for a team in L.A.

Recent developments have shown that the St Louis stadium project has “missed the deadline to get a measure on the August Ballot” as stated by ‘The Associated Press’, meaning that the residents of St Louis will not vote on using tax money to fund the riverfront stadium as early as the stadium project team would’ve liked. This delay could set the date of this vote as far back as November.

Moreover, the board that runs the Edward Jones Dome is suing the development team for this new stadium in state-court, about using tax-payers money to fund this stadium, delaying the progress even further for Peacock and Blitz, and could potentially end to this development, using terms like ‘illegal’ and ‘overly broad’
