How Jared Goff Convinced Me That He Should Be the Next Los Angeles Ram

Final Thoughts

Although it may seem that I’ve been bashing Carson Wentz and praising Jared Goff for an entire article, I truly believe that these two quarterbacks will be successful in this league.

I won’t be mad if the Rams select Wentz on April 28th; I just happen to favor Goff over him at this point of the draft process.

Back in 2012, the Elite 11—a Student Sports Inc. program hosted by former NFL QB Trent Dilfer designed to develop top high school quarterback recruits—introduced me to the blonde-haired kid out of Marin Catholic High School. In a year that was headlined by “elite talents” such as Christian Hackenberg and Asiantii Woulard, not many would have expected Jared Goff to be a potential number one overall draft pick.

Yet, here we are.

Jared Goff’s collegiate journey began as the first true freshman quarterback to start a season opener in Cal Football history, where he had to survive a dismal 1-11 record. He ended that year with decent stats (considering he was being thrown into the fire with new head coach Sonny Dykes), posting a 60.3% completion percentage for 3,508 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.

In 2014, Goff rallied his team to a more respectable 5-7 season in a fierce Pac-12 conference, completing 62.4% of his passes for 3,973 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions.

Then in 2015, Goff led the Golden Bears to their first bowl game since 2011, throwing for 4,719 yards, 43 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions with a 64.3% completion percentage.

The trend is definitely going upward for Jared Goff entering the NFL Draft, and hopefully the Los Angeles Rams have the tools necessary for him to succeed. We have a stout defense headlined by Aaron Donald and Trumaine Johnson, an unproven yet potentially dangerous receiving corps (I would still like to see us add a tight end and wide receiver via draft or free agency), and a steadily improving young offensive line when healthy.

Oh yeah, and he gets to hand the ball off to budding superstar Todd Gurley in order to relieve some first overall pick pressure.

Ultimately, whether the Los Angeles Rams select Jared Goff or Carson Wentz, it’ll be up to the coaching staff and surrounding talent to give their new quarterback an environment to lead this team out of despair and into the playoffs.

No more excuses for Jeff Fisher and Les Snead. Let’s see if this team is ready for a potential “franchise quarterback”.
