The Los Angeles Rams quarterback battle between Case Keenum and Jared Goff will get interesting once preseason gets underway.

When the Los Angeles Rams traded up to select Jared Goff with the No. 1 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, it was clear the starting job at quarterback would eventually belong to him–whether it was this season or next. Rookie quarterbacks over the last couple of years have been thrown into the starting role right away and while that was certainly an option with Goff, many wondered if Rams head coach Jeff Fisher would take the safe approach and have veteran Case Keenum start at quarterback for at least the beginning of the season.

A few weeks ago, it seemed like the team was leaning towards making Goff the starter, but it appears Fisher may have changed his plans around during the first week of training camp.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio discussed this week how Fisher made a reference to Keenum being the starter at quarterback–which took everyone by surprise when considering it seemed like the battle was still going on.

"“He made some really good throws,” Fisher said. “I mean, some really good throws throughout practice. That’s what you expect out of your starter.”"

Obviously, there’s still plenty of time to watch this battle play out, but it does seem like Fisher is going to take the safe approach to start the preseason by starting the veteran at quarterback over the rookie. There’s no question Goff would prefer to be the starter once opening weekend rolls around, but some of his struggles throughout training camp so far have been noticeable as the former California star is still adjusting from college to the NFL.

Keenum may not be the most experienced of quarterbacks, but if he does end up keeping the starting job at quarterback to start the season, at least it will be easier with the help of Todd Gurley and Tavon Austin on offense.
