Los Angeles Rams: Benny Cunningham Shouldn't Receive New Deal From Team

After four seasons, the Los Angeles Rams may end up parting ways with running back Benny Cunningham and test the open market for another backup to Todd Gurley.

Throughout his career with the Los Angeles Rams, Benny Cunningham has always been one of those players fans loved to root for, even if he struggled to make the necessary impact on offense. Unfortunately, Cunningham was limited to appearing in just 11 games for the Rams during the 2016 season after being placed on injured reserve due to a neck injury, and now that he’s a free agent, there’s a chance the team will choose to part ways with the running back.

When looking at the numbers alone, Cunningham doesn’t even come close to making a strong enough case for Los Angeles to provide him with a new deal heading into the 2017 season. Cunningham may have appeared in 57 games for the Rams over the last four years, but he’s only rushed for 748 yards to go along with four touchdowns.

Even though the 4.4 yards per carry throughout his career is impressive, Los Angeles seems like they would be better off with another No. 2 running back behind Todd Gurley heading into next season. At 26 (turning 27 in July), Cunningham isn’t getting younger any time soon, and when looking the upcoming free agent market along with an intriguing draft class, the Rams will have plenty of other great options to work with instead of Cunningham.

The good news for Los Angeles is moving on from Cunningham would be one of those moves with little impact on the team when considering he was barely on the football field to begin with. Of course, if the Rams do end up deciding to move on from Cunningham, they better consider a reliable No. 2 option in case Gurley struggles to break the 100-yard rushing mark in 2017 like he did all of last year.

Then again, hopefully that won’t be the case for Gurley and the Rams, assuming the team addresses their offensive line issues over the next couple of months to make life much easier for all the team’s running backs heading into the 2017 season.
