With Alshon Jeffery expected to hit the free agency market, the Los Angeles Rams need to make a push for signing the wide receiver.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out the offense of the Los Angeles Rams is in desperate need of help this offseason after ranking at the bottom of the league in 2016 by only averaging 14 points per game. The good news for the Rams is there will be plenty of amazing wide receivers to go after from this year’s free agency class, and thanks to the Chicago Bears, Alshon Jeffery will be available for teams to pursue.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Bears aren’t expected to place the franchise tag on their beloved wide receiver for the second year in a row, which is a smart move on their end since it would have cost the team more than $17 million just for the 2017 season. After only finding the end zone twice in 12 games last year, this decision by Chicago shouldn’t come as a surprise, as the last thing they want to do is overpay a player like Jeffery when they don’t even know who their quarterback is going to be heading into Week 1 next season.

Now, the question is whether or not the Rams will make a strong push to bring Jeffery on board for the 2017 season to provide Jared Goff with a dangerous threat to work with in the passing game. One of the main reasons why the former No. 1 pick failed to record a single win in seven starts during his rookie season was due to the fact Los Angeles had one of the league’s weakest receiving corps last year, especially Tavon Austin.

Unless Sean McVay figures out a way to get the best out of Austin and his speed on offense next season, the current No. 1 wideout on the Rams will continue to be seen as one of the league’s most overpaid players after only recording 509 receiving yards in 2016. Then again, with a big-time playmaker like Jeffery in the mix drawing the extra coverage from opponents, maybe Austin would see some extra passes thrown his way, and finally live up to the contract he’s under.

Of course, none of this means anything if Los Angeles doesn’t make the necessary moves to go after Jeffery in a few weeks. Joining a team that only won four games last year may not seem like the most ideal landing spot for a player like Jeffery, but here’s to hoping the Rams can get him to at least consider the possibility.
