The Los Angeles Rams hope the added weight by Jared Goff will help the second-year quarterback elevate his game to the next level.

Even though he still has a long way to go when it comes to proving himself, early signs point to Jared Goff looking like a completely different quarterback heading into his sophomore year with the Los Angeles Rams, mainly thanks to a whole new coaching staff. The Rams took a huge risk during the offseason when deciding to make Sean McVay the youngest head coach in NFL history, and based off how organized team activities have gone so far, it looks like Goff is going to benefit from playing in this new system.

The former No. 1 pick is already drawing heavy praise for how comfortable he’s looked with learning the new offense, as Goff and Los Angeles started their first day of organized team activities on Monday, although Aaron Donald made the decision not to participate. Between the addition of Robert Woods in free agency along with picking up a few new weapons in the 2017 NFL Draft such as Cooper Kupp and Josh Reynolds, it’s good to see Goff recognize the importance of developing the necessary chemistry with his new wide receivers to improve in his second year.

On top of putting in the work with his new teammates, one of the things Rams Insider Myles Simmons pointed out this week is the added weight by Goff during the offseason that will hopefully help with his development process. Here’s what Simmons had to say about Goff, courtesy of the team site:

"Last year, Goff came in sporting 215 pounds on his 6-foot-4 frame. Now, he’s added some weight as he begins OTAs in Year 2.“I’ve probably put on five to 10 pounds,” Goff said. “I feel good. I feel strong. I feel like this is the best shape I’ve been in in a long time. But that’s kind of been every year. Every year I’ve kind of gotten bigger and stronger and I’m still growing. I don’t think I’m growing in height, as much as I’m getting a little bit wider.”"

To say the Rams’ offense struggled in 2016 which would be a major understatement after the unit ranked near the bottom of the league after only averaging 14 points per game thanks to a poor offensive line and an extremely weak receiving corps. And while Goff certainly deserves some benefit of the doubt when considering what he had to deal with during the seven games started under center, those excuses simply won’t cut it for the youngster this upcoming season.

Los Angeles was willing to surrender numerous important draft picks (including the No. 5 from this year’s draft) to the Tennessee Titans last year just to land Goff with the top pick, and the last thing the organization wants to see is him turn out to be a complete bust. But based off what the quarterback has already shown over the last few months during practices and workouts, hopefully that won’t be the case with Goff for the Rams.
