The Los Angeles Rams used the franchise tag on cornerback Trumaine Johnson at the beginning of March for the second year in a row.

For the second-straight season, the Los Angeles Rams decided to place the franchise tag on Trumaine Johnson to avoid him testing the free agency market. Of course, rumors have been swirling over the last few months when it comes to Johnson’s future with the team since he was previously linked in numerous trade talks, but it looks like the Rams may be considering the possibility of a long-term deal once again for the cornerback.

ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez discussed this week how Los Angeles could sit down with Johnson in the middle of June to discuss the possibility of a new extension once organized team activities, which started on Monday for the team, come to an end. The Rams are already scheduled to pay Johnson $16 million for the 2017 season since this will mark the second year in a row under the franchise tag, but it will be interesting to see if the two parties are able to strike a deal a few weeks from now, as Gonzalez discussed.

With that being said, this does kind of seem like a surprise move by Los Angeles since they easily could have given him an extension a few months ago instead of using the franchise tag again. By using the franchise tag instead of trying to reward him with a new deal, the Rams seem hesitant on giving Johnson a hefty deal due to the fact they’re not sold he’s capable of handling the responsibilities of a No. 1 cornerback.

Los Angeles felt confident enough in making Johnson the No. 1 cornerback last year after losing Janoris Jenkins to the New York Giants in free agency, but his production level took a major hit after recording seven interceptions in 2015 to just one all of last season in 14 games. When looking at all of the chatter surrounding this story over the last few months, it’s tough to determine how the Rams truly feel about Johnson.

Hopefully, fans receive a better idea of what’s going to happen in a few weeks if the two sides actually sit down, and discuss the possibility of an extension for Johnson. Otherwise, this story surrounding Johnson is just going to continue going back and fourth until the regular season officially gets underway at the beginning of September.
