Can Sean McVay make Todd Gurley a top-five running back in Rams’ offense?
By Dan Parzych
After a disappointing sophomore season, the Los Angeles Rams have high expectations for Todd Gurley heading into 2017.
The Los Angeles Rams had high expectations for Todd Gurley heading into his sophomore year with the team in 2016 after an impressive rookie campaign the year before in which he rushed for 1,106 yards to go along with 10 touchdowns while playing in just 13 games. Unfortunately, the former Georgia standout took a major step back last year by failing to even record a single 100-yard game, but hopefully all of that will change for Gurley in 2017 thanks to numerous key changes.

For starters, it was a huge relief to see Los Angeles part ways with Jeff Fisher towards the end of last year before he could even finish his fifth season with the team when considering the former head coach never even recorded a single winning season. Making Sean McVay the youngest head coach in NFL history may seem like a risky move for the Rams, but based off how impressive the team has looked over the last few months, the decision should pay off, especially when it comes to Gurley.
Between the signing of Andrew Whitworth to boost the offensive line along with Jared Goff hopefully feeling more comfortable with running the new offense, things should be much different for Gurley this time around from a production standpoint. This time around, there hopefully won’t be any concerns surrounding Gurley fighting to post his first 100-yard game of the season since the Los Angeles running back should be able to do so on numerous occasions like his rookie year.

Rams fans will never forget that it was Gurley himself who made a bold statement last offseason by claiming he deserved to be the first overall pick in fantasy football leagues, mainly because he felt confident enough in his chances of being the top running back in the league. While that was obviously far from the case, don’t be surprised if Gurley uses that as extra motivation to make sure that doesn’t happen again, and flourish in McVay’s offense to make a strong case for being one of the league’s top running backs once again.
