As the Los Angeles Rams get ready for the season, one professional scout has analyzed the Jared Goff, and he is not impressed by what he sees.

Few things are as important for the Los Angeles Rams in 2017 as the performance and development of Jared Goff. If he becomes or takes major steps toward being a franchise quarterback this year, the future of the team is bright. If he doesn’t, Los Angeles may look elsewhere.

The advent of camp and preseason football brings analysts and media scouts out of their offseason film closest, and some of them are talking. Greg Cosell, for example, was on the Ross Tucker Football podcast this week sharing some of what he had witnessed on tape this offseason. Cosell noticed that Goff struggled on first down after watching all seven games he started last year, and paid particular attention to how the young quarterback performed on first down. Here was part of his analysis on Goff:

"Jared Goff has a lot of concerns as we sort of go forward and it will be interesting to see what Sean McVay can do. I mean he has a number of issues that jumped out which I imagine were true on second and third down as well. He had footwork and balance issues in the pocket. He was very slow to see things and isolate where to go with the ball within the structure and timing of the route concepts. It was evident he just couldn’t see things real clearly. I think there are some questions when you watch the tape about his toughness in the pocket and his willingness to stand and deliver."

Ouch.

We can point out a number of factors that contributed to this. A porous offensive line. Underwhelming offensive weapons. An uninspired offensive scheme. A coaching staff that has shown no ability to develop quarterbacks or score points in the modern NFL.

But we still have to deal with how poorly Goff performed. Cosell is right, it will be interesting to see what McVay and company can do. They have certainly taken steps to add talent and protection to that side of the ball. The result could only better play, right?

At least for Rams fans, they will find out soon enough where Goff currently stands, as the team prepares for their first preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys on Saturday night. Hopefully, all goes well for the second-year quarterback to at least make Los Angeles feel more confident about him being their potential franchise star.
