LOS ANGELES, CA - OCTOBER 08: Head coach Sean McVay of the Los Angeles Rams talks with Jared Goff

QB Dan Orlovsky was interviewed by Ross Tucker and shares an insider’s perspective about Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay from training camp last year.

In the months leading up to the draft, QB Dan Orlovsky shared about his experience with the Los Angeles Rams.  The veteran quarterback was the third quarterback in camp last year and ended up being cut at final cut downs, but he spent a fair amount of time with the team.  His comments were noteworthy, particularly with what he said about Rams head coach Sean McVay.  He was interviewed on the Ross Tucker Football Podcast and did not hide that he was impressed with the young coach.

"He has this unique skill set of football knowledge, that really understands the game of football when it comes to offensive plays, putting players in positions to be successful, the rhythm of play calling, taking things that look exactly the same, and then running different stuff out of it. He understands defenses, how to attack defenses, what the weaknesses are."

This is the offensive revolution we saw last season, where the Rams went from last in scoring offense for first.  It is cool that Orlovsky saw this front and center in training camp.  He continues:

"And then he’s got this really good energy, persona, personality about him that is very vibrant, very honest, very transparent, and there’s an ego, but there’s not an ego problem. He is really confident in himself, but he doesn’t belittle people. He’s got this great way of teaching where he is asking his players questions, and he is getting the responses that he wants, but the players are, in a way teaching themselves."

McVay’s energy and personality are things that have stood out from day one with the coach, in interviews and even on the field, taking defensive drops to show his secondary how to cover.

"And the thing that stood out to me in my time with him, and being an older guy on a younger team I had some really in depth conversations with him, and even on cut day when cut downs were happening I had a fifty minute conversation with him, which, as you know, is incredibly rare. Just his honesty, he has this way of being really honest, which in the NFL is really rare. I think that just helps players gravitate towards him. So he just checks all these boxes as intelligent, good person, understands football, but incredibly driven."

Ross asks him what they talked about for fifty minutes on cut day, and he goes on to say,

"He asked me “What do you think that I do well?” and “What do you think I don’t do well?”, which was incredible to me. Here’s this guy, head coach of one of the thirty-two teams in the NFL and he’s asking me, “Hey, is there anything you think I can do better?”"

McVay has been the biggest reason for the Rams turnaround.  As a young head coach, it is clear that he is doing everything he can to make sure he is growing as a person and as a professional.  It will be interesting how McVay continues to grow and improve in his second offseason.
