1. Kelly may secure No. 2 running back job

In what may end up being one of the biggest surprises from the Rams in the preseason, Kelly seems to have emerged as the favorite to land the backup job behind Gurley after leading the team in rushing yards every game so far heading into the finale before Week 1. Back in April, Los Angeles knew they had nothing to lose with Kelly when he was still available in the sixth round, and even though the former Tennessee star still has a long way to go, early signs point to him being a huge steal.

Without question, Kelly has been one of the players that has benefitted the most from McVay resting the starters through the first three preseason games, and one can only imagine the impact he’s going to make during the regular season in a few weeks. Gurley has proven to be a workhorse after last season, and even though he’s going to try staying on the field as much as possible, the Pro Bowler is still going to need a rest every once in a while, which is where Kelly could come into play.

No matter when he’s needed, Kelly could have a major advantage over opponents by filling in for Gurley whenever needed with fresh legs. Los Angeles was already considered dangerous on offense before Kelly came into the picture, and he may not put up Gurley numbers, but the rookie can still be a difference maker.
