Case Keenum would be more reliable than Sean Mannion as Rams backup in 2019

With the Denver Broncos agreeing to trade for Joe Flacco from the Baltimore Ravens, would the Los Angeles Rams consider the idea of bringing Case Keenum back?

Three years ago, Case Keenum found himself in a difficult position with the Los Angeles Rams since despite being the starting quarterback at the moment, the team would go on to trade up to land Jared Goff with the top overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Without question, it was easy to understand the decision by the Rams since Keenum had previously bounced around to numerous teams over the years trying to prove himself while Goff’s stellar career at California gave him all sorts of potential at the NFL level.

At first, Los Angeles felt the best approach for the 2016 season would be to have Goff play behind Keenum while learning from the sidelines as a rookie, but those plans would quickly change, as the Rams’ offense turned out to be one of the biggest jokes in the NFL.

As frustrating as it was to watch both Keenum and Goff struggle the way they did, it should also be noted it wasn’t entirely their fault since Los Angeles as a team didn’t exactly do the best job of providing the quarterbacks with the proper weapons to work with.

Between a poor offensive line along with a weak receiving corps, most quarterbacks would struggle in an offense like the Rams the way these two did in 2016. And while Keenum knew it was only a matter of time before he would lose the starting job to Goff sine they didn’t trade up for the top pick just to have him ride the bench, it’s tough not to wonder if Keenum would be open to a potential return to Los Angeles for the 2019 season.

In what will turn out to be one of the biggest stories of the offseason, the Denver Broncos, who signed Keenum to a two-year deal last year, agreed to a trade with the Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday to bring Joe Flacco on board once the new league year officially gets underway.

Basically, it looks like the Broncos only needed one year to realize that Keenum wasn’t the answer they were looking for as the starter, and will most likely look into shopping the quarterback through a potential trade in the coming weeks.

If Keenum does in fact end up on a new team for the 2019 season, the Rams would be wise to at least consider the possibility of a potential reunion with their former quarterback, assuming they wouldn’t have to pay most of that ridiculous money from his hefty contract.

Over the years, Sean Mannion has shown potential at times when it comes to being able to handle the duties of being Goff’s backup, but also Los Angeles has been fortunate enough where he hasn’t been needed in a meaningful game.

Too many teams over the years have learned the hard way just how important it is to have a backup quarterback they can count on, and one can only imagine how devastating it would be if the Rams were ever in a position where Mannion struggled to fill in for an injured Goff.

Keenum’s first season with the Broncos may not have lived up to the hype after watching all of the success from the year before helping the Minnesota Vikings reach the NFC Championship, but this doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be better off backing up Goff again.

In comparison, there’s no debate that Keenum would be a much better option than Mannion as the No. 2 quarterback on offense for the Rams, even if it ends up being just for the 2019 season. So if Denver does in fact explore potential options to move on from Keenum, Los Angeles should at least consider the possibility since if they can upgrade from Mannion, this would seem like an easy decision.
