Sean Mannion to meet with Minnesota Vikings on Monday
By Dan Parzych
After spending the first four years of his career with the Los Angeles Rams, Sean Mannion will meet with the Minnesota Vikings on Monday.
Even though Sean Mannion is no longer part of the plans for the Los Angeles Rams after four seasons, the team is still interested to see where he ends up for the 2019 season since they have every reason to wish nothing but the best for their former backup.
Before free agency officially got underway, there were early signs that Los Angeles would allow Mannion to test the open market, mainly because his asking price would most likely be too much compared to what other teams were willing to offer.
While Mannion hasn’t exactly done anything significant on the field since the Rams have luckily never needed him for a meaningful game since Jared Goff has stayed healthy, just learning under Sean McVay over the last two seasons was enough to get other teams interested in the backup.
In fact, it looks like the Minnesota Vikings are considering the possibility of Mannion coming on board for the 2019 season, which is ironic since Case Keenum found himself in a similar scenario two years ago when his time with the Rams came to an end.
Earlier in the week, there were reports about how Mannion was expected to meet with the Vikings this weekend, but it looks like Monday is the official meeting day between the two parties.
Competing with Kyle Sloter for the role to be the official backup to Kirk Cousins may not seem like a preference for Mannion since he would most likely prefer to just have the job, but unfortunately he can’t be picky at this point in the offseason.
The good news is if learning under McVay over the last two seasons really did benefit Mannion, competing with another quarterback like Sloter for the No. 2 job shouldn’t be an issue.
As for the Rams, as mentioned before, the team should feel nothing but happiness towards their former backup since this won’t have an impact on the 2019 season.
With all due respect to Mannion, Los Angeles was much better off signing Blake Bortles as the new backup to Goff instead, mainly because of the experience factor after all those seasons spent with the Jacksonville Jaguars as the starter.
