Have the LA Rams completed all planned coaching changes?

The LA Rams made two coaching changes on Monday, January 6. Have they finished, or will more changes be announced?

The LA Rams hit the floor running on Monday January 6.  Before noon pacific time, the Rams had already parted ways with defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.  By 3 p.m. PT, former running backs coach Skip Peete was dismissed.  And then, the reports fell silent.

For today, at least.

After a disappointing 9-7 record, the LA Rams surprised nobody with changing some of the coaches.  The surprise was the speed of those changes, and the roles of the coaches who were dismissed.

After all, some could make the argument against quarterback coach Shane Waldron. After all, quarterback Jared Goff regressed this season, albeit due to a very shaky offensive line.   Foir that matter, if you blame Coach Peete for the running game struggles this year, why does offensive line coach Andy Dickerson get a pass?  The optics to the Rams offensive woes clearly remained on that offensive line, battered as it was.

Perhaps the more promising changes would be to align the offense altogether. That is, reorganize the entire offense under one coordinator going forward.  After all, splitting offensive duties between run game coordinator Aaron Kromer and pass game coordinator/QB coach Waldron was not the answer in 2019.

The defense is managed through one coordinator, why split offensive responsibilities between the running game and the passing game?

Swapping parts … but were they really bad parts?

If you’ve ever taken your automobile to a bad mechanic, you understand full well how misdiagnosing the problem with your car leads to an endless cycle of swapping out the wrong parts.  Is that what’s going on with these Rams right now? Pulling out RB coach Skip Peete, all the while knowing the injuries to the offensive line and accumulated damage to RB Todd Gurley? This all seems like an attempt to just do something, whether there is any comprehension of the cause and effect or not.

So too does kicking defensive coordinator Wade Phillips to the curb leave a bad taste in one’s mouth.  After all, the Rams scored 527 points in 2018, while allowing 384 points. The following year, the Rams scored just 394 points in 2019, while allowing just 364 points.  In 2018, the Rams were a positive 11 turnovers, but netted to zero in 2019.  The difference?  Six fewer takeaways on defense, but five more giveaways on offense.

That’s hardly an indictment to either the defensive coordinator nor on the running backs coach. Today the Rams parted ways with two coaches. Have the Rams finished with coaching changes?  Tomorrow the team may part with additional coaches.  It’s really hard to tell WHAT might happen tomorrow.  You see, we didn’t see it coming today either.
