LA Rams assistant special teams coach Matt Daniels will join John Fassel by defecting to the Dallas Cowboys

The LA Rams continue to be a source for Dallas Cowboys new head coach Mike McCarthy in building his new staff. It was not enough for the Dallas Cowboys to poach Special Teams Coordinator John Fassel from the Rams coaching staff. Today, the same Cowboys are rumored to be poaching the Rams assistant special teams coordinator Matt Daniels to join Fassel.

When Fassel hired on with the Cowboys, Daniels was a logical candidate for promotion to the coordinator position.  Whether the Rams acted too slowly to retain Daniels, or the Rams simply had already decided to move on from Daniels, is anybody’s guess. Either scenario leads to today’s rumor – Daniels is joining the Dallas Cowboys.. Ironically, the Cowboys had also hired Rams former running backs coach Skip Pete.

This comes on the heels of rumors that the New England Patriots were hiring Rams assistant offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch. In that previous article, we summarized the net impact of coaching attrition among the LA Rams staff so far this season.  While the team had hired new offensive and defensive coordinators, the team has now parted ways with their former defensive coordinator, the running backs coach, the Special Teams coordinator, the assistant offensive coordinator, and finally, the assistant special teams coordinator.

The LA Rams have a growing list of “to do” actions this off-season. While it’s virtually impossible to guage just how close or far the Rams are to hiring replacements due to the lack of reported progress, the results are obvious.  The team has three fewer coaches on staff than the end of the 2019 football season.

Perhaps the purge is indicative of both coordinators seeking to hire coaches they are more familiar with and comfortable working with for the 2020 season. But the reduction of coaches on the Rams staff more likely simply adds to the work load for remaining coaches, as well as the duties and responsibilities of absent coaches being meted out to the remaining coaches.
