Could the LA Rams draft the future face of the franchise at the 2020 NFL Draft in April?
The LA Rams drafted quarterback Jared Goff as the first overall selection in the 2016 NFL Draft. Less than a year later, Sean McVay was named the Rams’ new head coach in January of 2017. During McVay’s tenure, the Rams have not drafted a quarterback.
Since hiring McVay, the Rams have drafted nearly every other offensive position besides quarterback. The Rams have selected nearly every defensive position, as well. It might be time to let McVay groom the next franchise quarterback, one McVay can call his own.
Goff begins his fifth season in the Rams uniform. In his pro career, he has completed 1166 passes for 14,219 yards with 87 touchdowns. Remember, under head coach Jeff Fisher, Goff was too raw, and only played in seven games, and only after the Rams offense suffered extended poor play.
Backup quarterback Blake Bortles becomes a free agent in March. It’s the consensus of virtually all pundits that LA will let him walk into the free-agent market. Still, there are plenty of young quarterbacks for McVay to develop into his offensive system. The Rams currently are relying exclusively upon the young passing arm of quarterback John Wolford. While Wolford has impressed in preseason games, he is not yet ready to take over this team – yet.
The Rams do not have a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, currently. Perhaps the Rams will trade into the first round should the situation necessitate doing so. If McVay wants his quarterback, and he is there late in round one, expect them to wheel and deal to grab him.
Potential Quarterbacks that the LA Rams Would Trade Up to Draft
First, Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert should be high on the list. Is it possible for Herbert to drop down within the Rams grasp? LA might have to deal more value than the team can afford to part with in order to get Herbert. Is Herbert worth it? Many scouts and Ramblin Fan staff think he could be.
Second, Utah State quarterback Jordan Love might fall into the Rams range in the draft. The 6-foot-4 tall ranger signal-caller has all of the raw talent and skillset necessary to become a starting quarterback in the NFL. As such, he becomes the perfect disciple for Rams head coach Sean McVay to mold into his version of an NFL quarterback. Charlie Campbell of walterfootball.com reports the following:
"As a pro prospect, Love has… a strong arm and can fire some lasers downfield and to the sideline. He also shows the ability to put air under the ball and throw touch passes. … His pocket presence is developed, and he has some mobility to move around as well."
Third, Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is a huge long shot for McVay and the Rams. However, some teams might shy away from him because of his injuries suffered last season. LA would most likely have to make a huge trade up to come anywhere close to the right proximity to corral Tagovalioa in this draft.
All three of these quarterbacks will be performing at the NFL Combine. You should pay very close attention to this group. The next franchise quarterback of the Rams could be there in Indianapolis that week.
