LA Rams trade for Redskins LT Trent Williams is viable Plan B option
By Bret Stuter
Why consider the deal at all?
The LA Rams are painted into a corner, folks. The team simply cannot enter the 2020 NFL Draft without an offensive left tackle under contract. That’s the bottom line and shame on the team for being in this situation in the first place.

NFL veteran offensive tackles in this year’s free agency market are in short supply, declining production, and will be incredibly pricey. The Rams simply cannot hope to win any bidding wars when the only factor is money. They’ve already spent far too much on far too few players.
Why Williams? He is a known one-year contract. The Rams could trade for him, draft his successor in the 2020 NFL Draft, and simply promote his backup in the 2021 season. The critical piece to the Rams’ view is the 2020 NFL season.
Sure, “Don’t do that” will be the likely first reaction in the comments section, and we concede the matter is not an enviable one for the team. Any offensive tackle on the Rams’ Draft Board at 52 will either be flawed or raw. While the team can coach up players into NFL starters, that takes time. And the blindside tackle will take the most time of any offensive linemen.
The key to success is to prepare for various scenarios. Ideally, the Rams and Whitworth’s agent arrive quickly at a team-friendly deal which ensures Andrew Whitworth can retire as an LA Rams tackle, is affordable for the Rams, and ensures enough time on the roster to mentor and develop the next left tackle. The Rams cannot fail to fill the left tackle position. That means they must consider and weigh out each option. Redskins left tackle Trent Williams is a polished NFL veteran who will do a fine job at the position, no matter which team he plays for.
Both head coach Sean McVay and offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell have strong ties to the Washington Redskins and with left tackle Trent Williams. They both worked with the Redskins offense, and know Williams’s strengths, weaknesses, and most of all value. But for the Rams and the sake of the fans, let’s hope it never comes to that.
