The LA Rams did very well when the team signed on former Bronco’s running back C.J. Anderson. In fact, he was one of the workhorses who carried the team into Super Bowl LIII.  So it was a bit disappointing when the Rams made no offer to retain him for the 2019 season.  He eventually signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions but was cut before the end of their season.

The failure of the LA Rams to make an offer to 5-foot-8 225-pound Anderson was a bit disappointing, particularly in the way the 2019 running game seemed to sputter all-season. The disconnect may have been the passionate interest from Anderson to compete for significant playing time, while the LA Rams intended all along to get younger at the running back position.

Now with a season apart, perhaps the Rams and Anderson could find the middle ground.  After all, the last LA Rams running back to put up 100 yards rushing was C.J. Anderson, who did it in three consecutive games against the Arizona Cardinals (167 yards on Dec. 23), San Francisco 49ers (132 yards on Dec. 30) and Dallas Cowboys (123 yards on Jan. 12).

Anderson did not contribute much in the passing game, and the 2018 Rams didn’t need him to do so.  But with a new offensive coordinator, Anderson could become the second back who blocks for Gurley, protects Goff, and essentially becomes option B for a renewed running game in 2020. And best of all, he too would be an inexpensive addition to the team.
