LA Rams: 3 Top draft targets following NFL Scouting Combine
By Larry Brake
LA Rams should target these three prospects in the NFL Draft following their NFL Combine performances
LA Rams fans were able to witness their favorite future player perform at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine this past week. Now, that dust has settled and the players will get another opportunity to impress team scouts on their respective Pro Day workouts. Remember, the free agency signing frenzy begins in a couple of weeks.
Each Rams fan knows, in their heart, which players to pursue and which to let go. Most of all, the salary cap is a huge determining factor as free agency looms. The Rams have around $23 million, according to spotrac.com, heading into the 2020 season. More can be found, but seemingly no NFL Team is willing to make wholesale changes until the outcome of the proposed new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is voted on by the NFL Players Association.
Perhaps, the most logical thing to do is, invest more in the NFL Draft than in free agency. The biggest reason is how affordable rookie contracts are, as opposed to free-agent price tags. LA can always use the franchise tags to keep a lid on their salary cap spending.
Doesn’t it make more sense to draft the next Aaron Donald than to try to sign him to a free-agent contract? This weekend in Indianapolis proved how deep this draft class really is. There is still a wealth of talent for the Rams in round 2, if they don’t move up.
3 Top draft targets for the LA Rams following the NFL Combine
First, Hakeem Adeniji looked very good in his workouts. The offensive tackle from Kansas stands 6-feet-4 weighing 302 pounds. Chad Reuter of nfl.com wrote the following:
"Adeniji’s smooth movement was tough to overlook. … providing the strongest punch in the group when asked to hit a bag, but still dropping his hips to change directions well. It’s been a strong postseason for Adeniji, …"
Second, C.J. Henderson is a speedy cornerback with size. The former Florida product stands 6-feet-1 weighing 204 pounds. He ran a 4.39-second 40-yard dash while bench pressing 225 pounds 20 times. He would be awesome in press coverage against big wide receivers.
Third, Justin Herbert will be somebody’s future franchise quarterback. The Oregon signal-caller stands 6-feet-6 weighing 236 pounds. Would the Rams move up into the first round to get him?
Reuter reported the following after seeing Herbert perform:
"Nothing surprising about Herbert’s athleticism or his throwing prowess Thursday night. The ball came out very well and the placement was plus. The arc on his deep throws was impressive."
The LA Rams will likely address team needs in Free Agency. That will give the team enough flexibility to choose the best player on the Rams draft board when they make their selection. But we know that the LA Rams love to wheel and deal, so don’t be surprised if the Rams trade picks multiple times during the 2020 NFL Draft.
These are three top prospects that the Rams should target in the draft. There is still plenty of time for prospects to elevate their draft status. Let’s see how it all plays out in the next few weeks.
