Bite the bullet

The Rams were prepared to bite the bullet in 2020 for the excessive payout to just a few NFL players. The LA Rams contract situation obligated the Rams to release running back Todd Gurley.

The Rams have been handicapped by the lack of available salary-cap space so far in 2020. The Rams have retained a handful of players, while more have found a new NFL team willing to meet their salary expectations.

And new players sign elsewhere with each passing day. So far, the LA Rams are down ten players from the 2019 53-man roster. The team likely plans to fill those positions in the 2020 NFL Draft and from the ranks of undrafted free agents.  That seems to be where the Rams have stockpiled their remaining available salary-cap space.

But if the 2020 NFL season is not played, what happens to the team’s financial situation? Since all teams will be subject to the same resolution, the Rams actually have more upside than other teams.  The team will benefit from the anticipated bump in the 2021 Salary cap, and will certainly benefit from some sort of relief from the team’s 2020 financial obligations.
