Round 4 – Running Back II
With the 126th pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, the LA Rams select running back Darrynton Evans from Appalachian State.
Of course, someone will ask why the Rams would pick two running backs? Well, the reality is, Darrynton Evans is worth it. In fact, he’s so good, he’s already getting buzz as the steal of the draft which hasn’t happened yet. He immediately becomes a favorite of special teams coordinator John Bonamego to land the kick and punt returner role.
Thanks to a deep running back class, Evans falls far enough for the Rams to select him. He is 5-foot-10 and weighs just 203-pounds, but he has plenty of bursting speed to catch the eyes of Bonamego, Kevin O’Connell, and Sean McVay. He has great ball security, not fumbling at all in college. As an added bonus, he’s also adept at picking up blitzes and protecting his quarterback.
He averaged 6.0 yards-per-carry at the collegiate level. But it was not the fast outside-the-tackles sort of runs. He can carry the ball through any lane. And he has the upside as a pass receiving threat as well, catching 39 balls for 319 yards and six touchdowns. While he is very fast, he has a sudden change of direction ability to snap the ankles of many defenders. If RB Zack Moss runs like thunder, then RB Darrynton Evans runs like lightning.
