Round 5 – Safety
The Rams arrive in round 5 with the pick obtained from the Las Vegas Raiders. And so, with the 160th pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, the LA Rams select safety Julian Blackmon, from the University of Utah.
The Rams are eager to backfill a new safety onto the roster after the team has lost both Marqui Christian and Eric Weddle to free agency. Blackmon is the right pick here. Standing 6-foot-0 and weighing in at 187-pounds, the former-cornerback-turned-safety is incredibly versatile, and give DC Staley a reason to finish off the champagne. Since he has a solid background in pass coverage, he will be an ideal defender against NFC West tight ends, and at 6-foot-0, will allow him to compete for the ball.
He is most deadly when he anticipates routes, and jumps in for the quick pick. In 43 games, he has intercepted nine passes, two of which he had converted into pick-sixes. But Rams fans will love the way this guy wraps up ball carries and drops them like a sack of flour. He has a true appetite for hits and is excellent at finishing plays.
He’ll begin on special teams and will earn a strong reputation on Bonamego’s coverage team. From there, he’ll start showing up in nickel and dime defense packages, where he will really begin to shine. He’s a potential 2021 starter, and the Rams claim him in round 5.
