Pitfall 1- Picking more offensive than defensive players

The reality of the LA Rams is that the head coach leans heavily to the offense. Therefore, offensive payers for the most part “get paid”, and the front office has to figure out a way to pay for defenders. The breakout from Over The Cap.com reveals that the Rams have spent $127.5M on offense, and just $70.3 on defense so far. That is a huge bias, and the Rams need to fight the urge to make it worse.

Head coach Sean McVay is heavily oriented into the offense, and general manager Les Snead follows with the dollars. I won’t deny that quarterback Jared Goff is good. In fact, I argued that he is, in fact, a bona fide franchise quarterback.  But the Rams have invested heavily into a few players, which sets the expectation that those players will lead the team.

What is NOT needed right now is the team investing in more offense. With six draft picks, the LA Rams must invest in the defensive side of the ball to counter the measures of their NFC West rivals. It is a foregone conclusion that both the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks will invest in wide receivers in the upcoming draft. And the Arizona Cardinals, through a trade, has already landed a top wide receiver in former Texan DeAndre Hopkins.

While the Rams have a solid starting defensive backfield, the team needs to replace the 25 quarterback sacks caused by outgoing players like Dante Fowler Jr., Clay Matthews, Cory Littleton, and Morgan Fox.  That is 50 percent of the Rams sacks walking out the door.

Of course, no measure of pre-planning heading into any NFL Draft ever falls exactly as planned. Hopefully, the Rams can take advantage of any opportunity which presents itself, while avoiding these five crippling traps at the same time.
