The LA Rams are all in with QB Jared Goff. But the team is very shallow at backup quarterback. Should the team draft a quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft

Some difficult decisions face the LA Rams in the 2020 NFL Draft. One such enigma facing the team is the decision whether or not to draft a quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft.  Of course, there are extremes that will make the decision quite easy. If a player like LSU quarterback Joe Burrow falls to the Rams at 52, the decision is already made and the Rams would be foolish NOT to select him there.

But if the 12 top quarterbacks are selected in the first two rounds of the draft, would the Rams suddenly be pressured to reach for a quarterback just to get one in the draft? I think not.

So the matter falls, once more, upon the risk versus reward. Despite the Rams offense fixated upon a rather immobile pocket passer, there are indications that the NFC West rival San Francisco 49ers struggle to contain a fast dual-threat quarterback. So that gives the Rams one more decision on their logic tree. Should the team emphasize a pocket presence quarterback or a dual-threat quarterback?

The LA Rams, in a perfect 2020 season, can make a playoff run this year on the arm of QB Jared Goff, with only John Wolford as the backup. But the team will need more arms for the training camp exercises, for running the scouting team, for the practice squad, and for that insurance policy that is the equivalent of “in case of emergency, break glass”.   One of our diligent contributors, Larry Brake, has made a good argument for the Rams to add Navy Midshipmen quarterback Malcolm Perry or University of North Texas quarterback Mason Fine to the roster.

Next. The versatility of LA Rams defensive back Adonis Alexander. dark

In both cases, they are fast dual-threat quarterbacks whose versatility could be added to the offense as a quarterback, running back or receiver. Adding them to the roster in 2020 gives the Rams options into the future on offense.  And what the Rams won’t add in the 2020 NFL Draft, the team has proven excellence in adding via the undrafted free agents immediately thereafter.
