Why LA Rams rematch games with SF 49ers are must watch
By Bret Stuter
The LA Rams and SF 49ers have traded season sweeps, with the victor playing in the Super Bowl. Here’s why the 2020 rematch will be must-watch television
The LA Rams and the San Francisco 49ers traded places somewhat in 2018 and 2019. In 2018, it was the LA Rams who swept the 49ers en route to Super Bowl LIII, only to lose to the New England Patriots. In 2019, it was the San Francisco 49ers who swept the Rams en route to Super Bowl LIV, only to lose to the Kansas City Chiefs. Now, the LA Rams and SF 49ers will face off twice in 2020. And those two games will be the best viewing of the 2020 NFL season.
The 2018 sweep of the 49ers by the Rams were simply the Rams defeating an inferior opponent. The 49ers fielded one of the worst teams in the NFL, broken by early injuries and a roster that simply did not have enough talent to compete. The Rams did have enough talent, in spite of the injury to young standout wide receiver Cooper Kupp and a late-season injury to feature running back Todd Gurley.
The 2019 sweep of the Rams by the 49ers found the shoe on the other foot. While the Rams suffered tremendous injury loss of personnel on the offensive line and in the defensive backfield, the 49ers found their roster healthy and buoyed by a solid 2019 draft and free-agent signings. Despite the disparity of healthy players, the Rams played it very close in the second game of the 2019 season.
Now head coach Sean McVay will have a chance to study game films, and decypher the San Francisco 49ers formula to success, much like the 49ers decypher the Rams secrets the previous offseason. While there has been much discussion over the LA Rams attrition due to free agency, the 49ers defense has been hit particularly hard this offseason. The 49ers traded away All-Pro DeForest Buckner and failed to resign some key contributors on the defense like DL Sheldon Day. Meanwhile, the offense lost a key player in WR Emmanuel Sanders.

While the LA Rams have their own share of roster turnover, the team may have improved the offense with the addition of running back Cam Akers and receiver Van Jefferson.
The LA Rams travel to San Francisco week six on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 5:20 p.m., and will be the Sunday Night game televised by NBC. After tuning up on offense and defense in the first five weeks, it’s an all-out fight-to-the-finish for the Rams. Look for the Rams to get incredible performances out of their defense, as both Terrell Lewis and Aaron Donald record multiple sacks against Jimmy Garropolo. Rams 24 49ers 14
The NFL schedule makers do the Rams no favors by placing the rematch at Los Angeles on Sunday, November 29, 2020, at 1:05 pm. After a week nine BYE week, the Rams face a grueling schedule of facing the Seattle Seahawks at home on November 15, traveling across the country to Tampa Bay to face the Buccaneers on Monday, November 23, and then back to Los Angeles to host the 49ers on a short week to prepare.
The Rams will be tested hard in this rematch. The 49ers will come off their bye week and be plenty rested, while the Rams will be pushed hard by both the Seahawks and Bucs prior to this game. As long as the Rams remain healthy, a big if, they can eek this one out. This game will feature more offense, and if the Rams cannot contain Kittle, they will be playing from behind. Look for the Rams to counter with big games out of both Tyler Higbee and Gerald Everett, and running back Malcolm Brown to punch in the game-winning touchdown late. Rams 35 49ers 31
In both contests, the teams will have multiple highlights splash national sports coverage. And in both contests, the teams will play for the pole position of the NFC West division. If you are ready for NFL football, the Rams and 49ers will deliver. And if recent trends continue, the team that sweeps the other will be Super Bowl bound once more.
