LA Rams: Who’s going to be the backup QB?

Who’s going to be the LA Rams backup quarterback next season?  With the 2020 season inching closer, many are wondering who will be playing behind Jared Goff.  Will the coaching staff sign a veteran journeyman, a big name like Cam Newton, or stick with who’s already on the roster?  Let’s break it down.

In my eyes, a quality QB2 brings experience, perhaps one who had a stint of starts in the league.  He’s already been through the work of preparing as a QB1, he’s proven he can win games, ideally coming up clutch in some of them.  Sure, he may not have a strong arm or consistent play, but when called upon, he doesn’t get rattled by the moment.

Can Cam Come Quickly?

The obvious name on the list is Cam Newton.  He’s a proven winner with a huge arm.  The only true wide receiver threat he’s had in his career was Steve Smith, and they flourished together.  Running back Christian McCaffrey took the pressure off him, but their time together was so short, they didn’t get to their full potential.  Other than that, Newton has been over-productive with less than stellar talent around him.

Unfortunately, Newton has vehemently voiced he wouldn’t sign anywhere as a backup.  Plus, his career has been riddled with injuries, especially as of late.  He missed all but two games in 2019 with a foot injury.  Given his statements on being a backup quarterback and the long list of injury concerns, I highly doubt the Rams are for him.
