LA Rams QB Jared Goff earns more than the entire quarterback rosters of 27 other NFL teams
Thanks to 2020 and the new quarterback salaries of Phillip Rivers, Dak Prescott, Marcus Mariota, the LA Rams do not have the most expensive quarterback department in the NFL, but that is not the fault of backup quarterback John Wolford. LA Rams franchise quarterback Jared Goff earns more in 2020 than the top two quarterbacks on 27 NFL teams. And for a team which struggled to get under the salary cap in 2020 and likely will struggle to get under the salary cap in 2021, that invites the inevitable question. Is he worth the money?
That is the question that triggered the horrific question of who could the Rams get to replace Goff. Creating options is not concluding he isn’t worth it. It’s merely a logical part II to the question. The team has already asked the very same question. Their conclusion?
They hired Kevin O’Connell as an offensive coordinator to ensure Goff is worth the cost.
Haskins never looked better than when O’Connell worked with him
The Washington Redskins selected Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins with the 15th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. You may recall that Haskins was a consensus top-10 prospect, many debating whether he or quarterback Kyler Murray would be the first player chosen off the board. But when Haskins arrived at Washington, he arrived unprepared for what the NFL threw at him. In fact, he seemed as lost as any rookie in the NFL for some time. Lost until then Washington offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell worked with him.
After that one-on-one set of sessions, Haskins appeared to be far more confident in the pocket. He was decisive, effective, and dead-on accurate. The 3-13 team finished 2-4, and they were certainly within striking distance of winning three of the final four losses. Not just on defense, but in a 41-35 OT shootout with the rival NY Giants. For a quarterback who struggled to find the endzone, he was a completely different player.

Goff will get Haskins treatment
The same adjectives used to describe Dwayne Haskins in 2019 were also used to describe Rams QB Jared Goff that same year. Goff seemed rushed, hesitant, indecisive, slow, pressured, confused, and even frustrated at times, depending upon the week and article author from last season. To fix that, the Rams plan to dedicate offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell to work his one-on-one magic with Goff, with the intent to have similar results in 2020 as with rookie QB Dwayne Haskins from a season earlier.
And that’s what the Rams are banking on. A far more confident Goff, who is decisive, quick, effective, and dead-on accurate. But O’Connell has already added another layer to Goff that he didn’t expect from Haskins. He wants Goff to take charge of the offense, and run it like the veteran quarterback he now is.
It’s okay to ask questions about a player, his salary, and his production, as long as the answer is based on the information discovered. Too often the answers are predetermined, and the information is filtered to support that answer. But not in this case. Goff is expensive. But he is one of the most productive quarterbacks in the NFL and will prove to be so once again. On a down year, he threw for 4600 yards, 22 TDs, and 16 INTs. Since his best has yet to occur, his upside for 2020 could be 5000 yards, 35 TDs, and 10 INTs. Will that be worth it? You bet it will be.
