The LA Rams rival, the Seattle Seahawks, pull the trigger on blockbuster trade for NY Jets’ All-Pro safety Jamal Adams

Three weeks ago rumors were swirling about the chances of the San Francisco 49ers trading for safety Jamal Adams. Well, a big plot twist seemed to have occurred.   You see, Adams did go to a divisional rival, only it was the Seattle Seahawks. They went all-in on the deal to acquire the star safety and paid a fortune to acquire him.

It seems as if Seattle is copying the Rams philosophy from last year, paying a heavy price in the future for a win-now mentality. While most people thought the Rams paid a steep price for a premier corner in Jalen Ramsey the Seahawks seemed to pay even more for Adams.  After all, cornerbacks have retained their value, but safety value in NFL defenses is eroding.  NFL teams have learned that rotating cornerbacks to the safety position can work, so they have begun to do so with marginal cornerbacks.

The deal

According to Adam Schefter who broke the deal, the Seahawks sent two first-round picks, a third-round, and safety Bradley McDougald In exchange for the Jets Adams and a 2022 fourth-round pick.  In comparison,  the Rams traded two first-round and a fourth-round pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars for Ramsey.  A month ago, we correctly claimed that it would take a minimum of two first-round picks and another mid-round pick to pry Adams from the Jets. Today’s events proved that to indeed be the case.

While the Rams are fighting and scrapping to return as the top dog in the division, so are the Seattle Seahawks. If it’s any consolation prices, at the moment the Rams still seem to be setting the pace for how deals get done and could be one to haunt Seattle. With the Seahawks GM Schneider not having a solid track record with first-round picks, this could be seen as a win as they got a for sure All-Pro player instead of gambling in the draft.  Ramsey has officially set the tone for the NFC West and now Seattle is following suit.

The aftermath

However, it does hurt them in the fact that Schneider is great at trading down from the first round to gain multiple picks which often turn into several mid to late-round gems. While Adams is an All-Pro player, this deal could cause an issue with replenishing team needs and getting talent to surround him. And for what it’s worth, Adams will be looking for a huge payday in 2021, a year where the NFL is looking at a huge drop in the NFL salary cap.

This is a move by the Seahawks to counter the effectiveness of San Francisco tight end George Kittle.  The Rams have already committed to going “free-style” with All-Pro Jalen Ramsey this year, essentially committing Ramsey to defend Kittle when they face off twice a year. Now the Seahawks have their own All-Pro defensive back to throw at Kittle.  The balance of power in the NFC West is not going the 49ers way right now.

On another note, this makes the trade for Ramsey look even better. While most people are going to praise this a “brilliant move” by Seattle, those same critics weren’t high on the Ramsey deal which will seem hypocritical. Looking at the two the deals the fortune the Rams paid looks like the Rams made the more frugal deal compared to Seattle.
