LA Rams HOFer Isaac Bruce lobbying hard for Rams to sign Antonio Brown
The LA Rams may have questions at kicker. The team may be a bit average at offensive line. The team may be a complete mystery at linebacker. But the LA Rams are good at wide receiver. Not just average good, excellently good. So strong are the Rams at the wide receiver position, the team may literally cut players who may have made the 53-man roster in another year.
So when Rams HOFer WR Isaac Bruce stepped up to the microphone for CBS Sports Radio for the Zack Gelb Show, did anyone truly expect Bruce to lobby hard for Antonio Brown? Yes, you heard that right. Antonio Brown.
Bruce is very bullish on Rams this year
The show opened harmlessly enough, with Gelb prodding Bruce for his perspective about the LA Rams offense. Bruce believes that the quarterback Jared Goff will separate himself from other NFL quarterbacks this year. We concur. He thinks that the LA Rams found the steal of the draft in selecting rookie running back Cam Akers. We agree with that one as well.
By 2:40 in the broadcast, Bruce sings the praises of the Rams tight end tandem of Gerald Everett and Tyler Higbee. Once more, we are perfectly in agreement. By 3:00 into the show, Zach Gelb approaches the subject of the LA Rams wide receivers. His views are eloquently stated, and we share them as well. He loves the Rams receivers and believes that rookie wide receiver Van Jefferson will be an impact player this season.
Bruce bullish on Brown
But at 4:00 into the show, Gelb brings up the possibility of signing free agent Antonio Brown. Bruce’s views on this subject are his own when asked if the Rams should sign him:
"“Absolutely!”, Bruce stated without hesitation, “I mean you are talking about one of the premiere receivers of the past decade that we had. A guy that was very productive. I think the guy has started to make the 180-degree turn that’s required to be a part of a team, which I feel he wants to be."
We don’t share that belief. While the rumors of adding Brown’s talent to the rosters of either the San Francisco 49ers or the Seattle Seahawks were concerning, the reward of adding Brown to any NFL team comes with the even greater risk of a meltdown. With the presence of an eight-game suspension coupled with the risk of a COVID-19 outbreak, it’s very unlikely that such a deal will be struck between Brown and the LA Rams.
The Rams have a full wide receiver room for this year, The team is set for 2020, and the roster is likely already designed for 2021 as well. But Bruce loves the idea for Brown on the Rams roster. We don’t. Do you? And most importantly, do the Rams?
