Trouble for Terrell?

The great news is that rookie outside linebacker Terrell Lewis is back on the active roster. It’s Great, great news!  But the reality is that Lewis has missed the on-field experience of developing the repoire with teammates, familiarity with coaches, and the opportunity to show up and show off in on-field actions.

Terrell Lewis was a player many had projected as high as a round-one selection.  He has tremendous upside, with the power, height, and wingspan to develop into a very special edge rusher and pass defender in the NFL. And he will be coached by defensive coordinator Brandon Staley and linebackers coach Joe Barry, both of whom have excellent track records of developing and working with elite NFL edge rushers.  The trouble for Terrell is that he missed a critical period for the team’s training camp.

Lewis will make the 53-man roster

Now don’t worry, the LA Rams have a spot on their 53-man roster reserved for Lewis. The challenge will be how quickly the team can get him on the field for defensive snaps. this guy is a huge and powerful force off the edge, and he will ultimately earn a significant role on the defense.  But how quickly can he get up to speed to do so?

Thankfully, the team has two solid veterans holding down the fort in Leonard Floyd and Samson Ebukam.  Had Lewis remained on the active roster throughout training camp, he would likely still be playing behind both at the start of the season. The Rams should be able to get significant production from Lewis after their bye week even with his delayed start.  With Lewis’ return, the defense is back to full strength.  Hopefully, it will remain that way all season long.
